Water Safety
Encourage your customers to be adventure smart whilst exploring our coast.
Every year the RNLI rescues walkers from around the coast who had no intention of getting wet but who got caught out by the tides
Tide times and heights vary around the coastline and change daily, although tides have a reputation for being unpredictable, they actually follow a timetable more reliable than most trains! You can check the tide times for the location you are planning to visit by consulting the excellent tidetimes.org.uk
Stay away from cliff edges.
In winter, wave watch from a distance, 15cm of water can knock you off your feet.
If you fancy a dip, where possible, choose a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red and yellow flags.
Even a light breeze from the land to the sea can sweep you away from the shore, don’t use inflatables at the coast.
If you fancy exploring the coast by SUP or kayak it’s essential you know how to stay safe, check out the AdventureSmart guides to enjoying SUP and kayaking safely.
If you see someone in difficulty, don’t attempt a rescue. Tell a lifeguard, or, if you can’t see a lifeguard, call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.
The RNLI is appealing for businesses to become RNLI local ambassadors. Sign up and you’ll get access to safety materials and resources for you to share on your premises and via social media.
